Basketball Injuries: A Season for Ankle Sprains

With the football season behind us, the time to dribble, pass and shoot baskets is here. Basketball season is in full swing with local high schools and college teams playing hoops and recreational leagues and pick-up games getting underway. And despite the level of play, the game of basketball presents the body with unique challenges and rigors. Experts say getting your body in shape before hitting the hardwoods can help avoid common injuries associated with basketball.

The ankles, lower legs and knees are the most common sites for basketball injuries. The most frequent injuries are ankle sprains resulting from a player landing in the wrong position or stepping on another player's foot. Shin splints, caused by repetitive jumping and landing on ill-prepared feet and ankles, are also a common basketball malady.
